NASHVILLE (AP) The Nashville Predators signed coach Barry Trotz to a one-year contract extension Monday, two days after losing their first-ever playoff series. Trotz, 41, had an option year left on his original contract. The new deal gives the franchise an option for the 2005-06 season.
The Predators also extended the contracts of Trotz's staff, but declined to release any financial terms of the deals.
Trotz has coached all 492 regular season games in the Predators' six-year existence and led the team to its first playoff appearance, a 4-2 series loss to the Detroit Red Wings.
It was easily Trotz's best season in Nashville. The Predators were as high as fifth in the Western Conference in February, and earned a franchise-best 38 wins before entering the playoffs with 91 standings points as the conference's eighth seed.
Trotz, a candidate for the Jack Adams Trophy as coach of the year, holds the record for most games coached by a team's original coach since the NHL's first expansion in 1967. He is currently tied with Pat Quinn of the Toronto Maple Leafs for the third longest tenure of current NHL coaches behind Jacques Martin of the Ottawa Senators and Lindy Ruff of the Buffalo Sabres.
Nashville's longtime associate coach Brent Peterson, first-year assistant coach Peter Horachek, goaltending coach Mitch Korn and video coach Robert Bouchard all will return next season.
