Johnny Mercer's lyrics are the foundation of Maude Maggart's Skylark. Mercer also penned Trav'lin Light, an intriguing track from Queen Latifah.
PICK OF THE WEEK
Skylark
Maude Maggart with Jamie Cullum
Johnny Mercer would have turned 100 Wednesday, but this new recording (from TCM's documentary The Dream's on Me) proves that time hasn't diminished the visceral pull of his lyrics. Maggart's shivery vocals bring out its aching loneliness, while Cullum's piano work serves the wistful beauty of Hoagy Carmichael's music.
