The team said Griffey had the surgery, which was performed by Timothy Kremchek, on Monday in Cincinnati. The normal recovery time for such a surgery is four to six weeks.

It is the second time in a year that Griffey has had surgery on his left knee. He was limited at times during the season by the knee. He had it drained on multiple occasions.

Griffey batted .214 this season with 19 home runs and 57 RBI in 117 games and was embraced by fans in his return to Seattle. He was the designated hitter for all but the first weeks of the season.

Griffey, who turns 40 in November, has not announced whether he will play in 2010.
