'Gonzo' set to join Diamondbacks' front office

PHOENIX (AP) — The Arizona Diamondbacks have scheduled a news conference Saturday to announce that five-time All-Star outfielder Luis Gonzalez (FSY) will rejoin the organization as special assistant to the front office.

The Diamondbacks say Gonzalez, 41, will officially retire as an active player and assist team President Derrick Hall and other departments throughout the organization in his new role.

The team plans to will honor "Gonzo" prior to Saturday night's game against the Houston Astros as part of "Luis Gonzalez Appreciation Night" at Chase Field.

Gonzalez played for Arizona from 1996 to 2006 in his 19-year career and is best known for his Game 7 ninth-inning RBI single that beat the New York Yankees in the 2001 World Series.

He is Arizona's leader in home runs (224), RBI (774), runs (780), hits (1337), doubles (310), on-base percentage (.391) and slugging percentage (.529).

Gonzalez was with the Florida Marlins in 2008 and has 354 career home runs and 2,591 hits. The five-time All Star also played for the Astros, Chicago Cubs, Detroit Tigers and Los Angeles Dodgers.
