Unemployment rates rise in most states in October

Unemployment rates rose in 29 states and the District of Columbia in October from September, the Department of Labor said Friday.

Labor said 13 states registered declines and eight were unchanged.

Michigan ranked highest with a 15.1% unemployment rate, followed by Nevada at 13%, Rhode Island at 12.9% and California at 12.5%. North Dakota held the lowest rate at 4.2%, ahead of Nebraska at 4.9%.

The largest increases from September's unemployment rate were in Alaska, which rose 0.6 percentage points to 8.9%, and Wyoming, which rose 0.6 to 7.4%.

States with the biggest monthly drops in unemployment rates were Massachusetts to 8.9%, New Hampshire to 6.8% and West Virginia to 8.5%. Each had a 0.4 percentage point decline from September.
