No easy playoff path: Ravens' schedule dotted by big tests

CLEVELAND — The bad news for the Baltimore Ravens is that they are fresh out of Brady Quinns.

After feasting twice on the Cleveland Browns' former No. 1 draft choice, Ray Lewis and Co. must stare into the eyes of three of the NFL's top quarterbacks the next three weeks: Peyton Manning, Ben Roethlisberger and Aaron Rodgers.

POWER RANKINGS: Ravens can't crack the top 10 ROOKIE FOCUS: Oher puts NFL success ahead of the big screen

"I'm already thinking about it: Me and Peyton. Here we go again," said Lewis, the Ravens middle linebacker of Sunday's home game against the unbeaten Indianapolis Colts.

It has not been much of a fight lately. The Colts, who have defeated the Ravens six consecutive games, won the last two by a combined 75-23 score.

Two of the Ravens' last three victories since Sept. 27 have been against the 1-8 inept Browns, including Monday night's16-0 grind-it-out-affair. Quinn, benched in their first encounter, lasted the entire evening but produced only 74 yards passing. He also threw an interception, which Ravens safety Dawan Landry returned 48 yards for a score.

The Ravens' offense had difficulty gaining traction against the NFL's worst-ranked defense, before finding some momentum in the second half. For the second consecutive game, they managed only one touchdown on offense.

"One thing about us is that we're a tempo team," said Ravens running back Ray Rice, the team's leading rusher.

Baltimore won't have the luxury of being out of sync the next three weeks with home games against the Colts and Pittsburgh, plus a trip to Green Bay. The Colts are ranked No. 3 in total offense, followed by the Packers (No. 8) and Steelers (No. 9). The Ravens must play the Steelers twice.

The Baltimore kicking game is suspect. Steve Hauschka, who missed three pressure kicks, one of which cost them a last-second win at Minnesota, was released Tuesday. In recent weeks, the offense has gone into near hibernation. No wonder head coach John Harbaugh assesses this three-game stretch as meaning "probably everything for our season."

Added Rice: "These teams are great teams. This is where the season begins. We stumbled a bit in the beginning, but these three games right here, and the rest of the season, will tell the tale."

The Ravens are banged up and have one less day to get ready for the 9-0 Colts. Indianapolis possess the league's top passing offense with a No. 3 overall ranking. Baltimore is seventh in total defense.

Manning, with a multitude of targets, has completed 69.7% of his passes, boasts a nearly 3-to-1 touchdown-to-interception ratio and a QB rating of 104.2.

But the Ravens' offensive identity seems a bit constrained. While Joe Flacco is having a good season with a 90.7 rating, including a dozen touchdowns and a 65.3% completion percentage, the second-year quarterback has not passed for more than 200 yards in his last three games.

Unlike the pass-happy Colts, the Ravens do not have a single player in the top 25 in catches. Only Derrick Mason (36 catches, 14.7, 4 TDs) is ranked among the top 50.

"It comes to a point where, on offense, you have to decide what we want to be, and what we're going to do (about it)," Mason said. "You keep chopping wood and hope, eventually, it will break. The defense bailed us out (against Cleveland). Going forward, we have to score more points."

Ravens may have to concede the AFC North crown to 7-2 Cincinnati, which defeated them twice and owns the tie-breaker. That would leave them to scramble for a wild-card berth.

But while Quinn is packed away for the season, some good quarterback news does loom for them: The Ravens have remaining games against Detroit's Matthew Stafford, Chicago's Jay Cutler and Oakland's JaMarcus Russell.
