PISCATAWAY, N.J. (AP) — Rutgers running back Kordell Young (FSY) will miss the rest of the season with an injury to his right knee.

The third-down specialist was hurt in the Scarlet Knights' 31-0 victory against South Florida last week and will require season-ending surgery.

"Anybody who has been around him, you just hurt for the kid," coach Greg Schiano said Monday at his weekly news conference. "I know I do and I know you do. I have every bit of belief that he will get surgery and he will get well, fight his way back and be a productive player here. That is the kind of young man that he is."

This is the second time in three seasons Young has been sidelined because of knee surgery. He was lost in the third game of the 2007 season after injuring his left knee, a problem that has required multiple surgeries.

Young, who missed the first two games this season because of a procedure on his left knee, had nine carries for 28 yards and seven receptions for 48 yards.

"Hopefully, once we get this one fixed, nothing else can go wrong," Schiano said.

Starting tailback Joe Martinek (FSY) and Jourdan Brooks are expecting to pick up the third-down duties for Young, who was excellent picking up blitzes.

"We are going to have to mix and match," Schiano said. "Joe can do it. Jourdan can do it. There is a few people who can do it. We just have to watch reps in first and second down as well."

The 25th-ranked Scarlet Knights (7-2) play at Syracuse (3-7) on Saturday.
