DETROIT Red Wings general manager Ken Holland said Sunday that defenseman Niklas Kronwall will be out a minimum of four weeks after spraining his left MCL Saturday night in Montreal.
"The good news is there's no damage to the ACL," Holland said Sunday. "But we're looking at a minimum of four weeks and at a range of somewhere between four to eight weeks."
Kronwall was injured during a knee-on-knee hit by Canadiens forward Georges Laraque in the first period of the Wings' 3-2 shootout victory.
Laraque was assessed a two-minute minor for tripping on the play. The NHL will review the incident Monday, has asked the Red Wings for a medical update on Kronwall and most likely will hand down a suspension to Laraque.
The Red Wings, who play in Nashville on Monday, will play Derek Meech to fill the hole left by Kronwall. The team has no plans to call up anyone at the moment.
Detroit is also missing injured Johan Franzen, Valtteri Filppula and Jason Williams.
