Going to the kids: Eagles offense ready to lean on McCoy, Jackson

With veteran running back Brian Westbrook recovering from a concussion, the Philadelphia Eagles are counting on two rising young players to assume more significant roles in the offense.

Rookie running back LeSean McCoy and explosive second-year wide receiver DeSean Jackson showed Sunday night the swing of emotions that can generate. Both lost key fumbles, then rebounded to score the team's final two touchdowns in the 24-20 victory against the Chicago Bears at Soldier Field.

The victory kept the Eagles (6-4) one game behind the Dallas Cowboys in the NFC East and in control of a wild-card berth with a 5-2 conference record. The Bears (4-6) lost for the fifth time in six games after starting 3-1.

Jackson and McCoy were victims of the ball-stripping prowess of Bears cornerback Charles Tillman. Jackson fumbled at the Chicago 34-yard line in the second quarter as Philadelphia was trying to pad a 10-6 lead but hauled in a 48-yard TD pass in the third quarter to regain the lead. McCoy lost the ball after a 17-yard gain early in the fourth quarter with Philadelphia trailing 20-17, then scored the winning TD on the next drive by bouncing outside for a 10-yard run with 5:31 left in the game.

"There are going to be times things happen, but we were able to come back with two huge plays," said Jackson, who finished the night with eight receptions for 107 yards and was 2 yards shy of his seventh TD of 50 or more yards this year.

Jackson, who set an Eagles rookie record with 912 receiving yards last season, is on his way to his first 1,000-yard season, with 728 yards on 42 catches.

McCoy, a second-round draft choice from Pittsburgh, gained 99 yards on 20 carries.

"You've got to bounce back, man," McCoy said of the miscue. "You mess up one play, you've got to make two more plays."

Coach Andy Reid said he told the rookie to keep both hands on the ball in traffic. "It's hard for a back like him when he busts through there and he sees that daylight," Reid said. "He's thinking touchdown, and I'm thinking, 'Two hands on the ball.' "

McCoy, Philadelphia's leading rusher with 452 yards on 106 carries, said he was channeling Westbrook, who tells him not to dwell on the mistakes.

"Small memories, he's always telling me. I was trying to picture him saying that," McCoy said.

The Eagles, who entered the contest 1-7 in games decided by seven points or fewer the last 1½ seasons, avenged a 24-20 loss to the Bears last September.

Chicago quarterback Jay Cutler, who had thrown 11 interceptions in his first three night games in Chicago, drew the wrath of Bears Nation by failing to connect with wide open receivers on three plays that could have gone for touchdowns.

"I missed some throws early…That can't happen," said Cutler, who was intercepted once, in the final minute of the game.
