ATHENS (AP) — Greek authorities say an earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 5.7 has struck in western Greece. There have been no immediate reports of injuries or serious damage.

Athens Geodynamic Institute says the undersea quake struck at 07:25 a.m.Tuesday near the Ionian sea island of Zakynthos, 205 miles west of Athens.

Institute seismologist Dimitris Papanastasiou says the area where the quake occurred is one of the most seismically active in Europe. He says building standards are high on Zakynthos and the nearby island of Kefalonia because of the frequent earthquakes.
