VIRGINIA BEACH (AP) A 570-foot barge that went aground in the surf off of Virginia Beach was pulled out on Wednesday.
The Coast Guard said salvage crews used two tugs to pull the barge off Sandbridge at high tide.
Inspectors from the Coast Guard and a member of the American Bureau of Shipping were going to inspect the vessel to sea if it was seaworthy. If so it will be towed to Pennsauken, N.J.
The barge ran aground during a powerful storm Friday. Spokesman Mark Miller of Crowley Maritime Corp. of Jacksonville, Fla., said it was en route from Puerto Rico to the southern New Jersey port when it broke from its tow line.
While many cargo containers are empty, Miller said medical equipment, tankers of rum and other cargo remain secure onboard.
The Coast Guard said the barge has not leaked.
